We are celebrating Halloween at school!!! All the kids no matter the age, are very exited because they have been waiting longer for Halloween. I love to dress up. Im not saying that my favourite party its Halloween but I really like costumes. But what I really like about Halloween it’s how excited are the kids waiting and waiting for this special day. Everything related to Halloween makes them very happy. That is why I think it’s a nice opportunity to connect to their process of learning.
We have been working this 2 weeks Math, Music, English,… but with a spooky touch.
Let me use this metaphor, please: Teaching is like fishing, you need to learn when is the best moment to fish (teach), you need to be prepared, you need to read the signals and pull the fishing rod at the right moment, that is, you have to observe your students to recognise when it is the time to reinforce, guide and scaffold their learning process.
If the students are motivated then we must continue reinforcing, if they lose motivation our job as teachers is to find a way to get it back. In this case if they like halloween then we can use that topic to teach them shapes, vocabulary, being loud and quiet,… anything we need, because their minds are willing to see, to hear, to learn,… they are having fun doing spooky activities. And this is another way to integrate the curriculum and being interdisciplinar (In this article you can find more information about what is interdisciplinarity).
After all the activities the Halloween day its the perfect ending: We have costume party, Trick or Treat, candy and presents!
The result is: we have happy children and meaningful learning.
